Venice for a weekend

Venice is unlike anywhere else: canals instead of streets, palaces on the water and quiet lanes once the day-trippers leave. Stay overnight to see it at its best, early in the morning and late in the evening.

What to see in two days

  1. St Mark’s Square and Basilica
  2. Doge’s Palace
  3. Rialto Bridge and market
  4. The Grand Canal by vaporetto line 1
  5. Burano and Murano islands

Where to stay

Neighbourhood advice only: we do not earn from hotel bookings.

From the airport

Buses run from Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma in about 20–25 min (ATVO, or ACTV Aerobus line 5). The Alilaguna water bus goes to the centre and St Mark’s more slowly.

Official transport sites: Venice Airport · ACTV (buses and vaporetti) · Alilaguna

When to go

Best: March–May and September–November. Summer is hot and crowded; high water (acqua alta) is most likely October–January. On peak days in spring and summer, day visitors pay an access fee; overnight guests are exempt.
